Galloway cattle

The farm rears Galloway cattle which do well on the exposed moors. They are extremely hardy and are good mothers. They are crossed with a shorthorn bull to produce blue-grey calves which are reared for meat.

  • The cattle are kept as a 'suckler herd' which means that the calves suckle their mothers until they are weaned (brought off their mothers' milk to feed on grass) at around nine months old.
