Food for thought

Issues in food and farming are frequently controversial and directly relevant to young people. Teaching staff at Rushall Farm set out to challenge students to consider the implications of farming in the 21st century so that they will be able to see the bigger picture and make informed choices. Issues for discussion include:

  • The price of food

  • Threats to human health (BSE, genetically modified foods, pesticide use)

  • Environmental damage to the countryside

  • Access to the countryside

  • Animal welfare

  • Fair trade

  • CAP.

These issues become more relevant for young people who are able to visit the farm and make first hand observations. One way of initiating thought and debate is through an 'organic shop' where students examine the implications of organic farming compared with conventional production.
