Fieldwork techniques

The approach to learning at Rushall Farm is investigative, experiential and fun. A wide range of field work equipment is provided to help students learn key skills through hands-on investigation.

Students studying the physical factors involved in farming will normally take a tractor and trailer ride to the top of one of the largest fields at Rushall. Here they can appreciate the scale of the farm and understand the fundamental importance of land and soil to almost every farming activity.

Students take soil samples in order to investigate a number of soil types, considering important features such as permeability, ph and texture. Clinometers are available for examining the influence of relief.
