Dry stone walls

Rainton has distinctive dry stone walls that were built to keep livestock in or out of the fields.

Dry stone walls may appear lifeless but they provide valuable homes for plants, animals and insects.

Many varieties of flowering plants, ferns, lichens and mosses live in an on the walls. Insects and small animals live in and around the walls - basking on the sunny side and living and breeding in the wall itself.

Dry stone walls are found in many parts of Britain where stone is plentiful. The walls look different depending on which part of the country you are in, but they are all built in a similar way.
