Ayrshire cows

Rainton has a herd of 95 traditional Ayrshire dairy cows which are well suited to organic farming. 'Ayrshires' are a Scottish breed of cow.

The cows graze the flower filled organic pastures during the summer. During the winter, they live in the spacious cattle barns and are fed with silage - this is grass that is cut in the summer and then 'pickled'.

The cows are milked twice a day in the milking parlour and the milk is used to make the Cream o'Galloway ice cream. Some of the milk is sold wholesale.

» DID YOU KNOW?

A cow spends about six hours eating and eight hours chewing cud each day. Cud is the partly digested grass that has been chewed, passed in to one of the cow's four stomachs and is then brought up to be chewed again.
