Ancient woodlandThis wood is called Low Park Wood and much of it was 'coppiced' until the 1930s. Coppicing is the traditional art of cutting back re-growth from tree stumps (or stools) at regular intervals to produce straight poles.

Coppiced hazel can be used for thatching. Coppiced chestnut can be used for fencing. Widely spaced mature trees among the coppice are called ‘standards’. ‘Copse’ and ‘copt’ are names that refer to coppiced woods. |
