View point

The land here has been farmed for centuries and the farm has been part of the Sizergh Castle estate since 1239. In this photo you can see a patchwork of fields, hedges, walls and woodland.

  • Organic farmers Alison and Richard Park, together with the National Trust, are helping to preserve and restore this landscape.

» GRASSLAND

Grass fields are used for grazing livestock. Instead of using chemical fertilisers, organic farmers plant clover with the grass. Clover puts nitrogen into the soil, making it more fertile. cut grass is used for making silage (pickled grass) or hay (dried grass), which is fed to the animals in winter.
