The pond

The pond was made by creating a dam across the stream. The water level varies throughout the year and the pond dries up a little in the summer.

  • Frogs and toads visit the pond in the spring to 'spawn' (lay their eggs)

  • Water birds such as herons and moorhens can also be seen here searching for food.

» DID YOU KNOW?

Ponds (have clearly defined margins and) are one of the easiest habitats to observe and understand.

Some farm ponds were historically created for livestock to drink from.

You may also see new lakes or reservoirs on farms that are used for irrigating (watering) crops, especially for horticulture.
