Ancient hedgerow

This hedgerow is at least 400 years old and contains many species of wild plant. You can see swallows swooping here in the summer as they head for the cow pastures looking for insects.

  • Hedgerows help to keep farm animals in the fields and provide shelter for crops and animals

  • Hedgerows also act as 'wildlife corridors'. Wild animals like birds, mammals and insects can move along these corridors finding food and shelter, without having to come into the open.

» DID YOU KNOW?

Over the last 50 years, our countryside has lost 40% of its hedgerows.

Soil Association organic standards do not allow the removal of hedges without permission. Organic farmers do not trim hedges between April and August. This way farmers avoid damage to nesting birds and flowering plants.
