Organic chickens

Low Sizergh has a flock of 250 laying hens which produce eggs for sale in the farm shop.

  • Organic chickens are truly free-range with free access to pasture

  • Flock sizes are kept below 500 to avoid over-crowding and ensure plenty of roosting space in the chicken houses.

» CHICKEN FACTS

Chickens are believed to have descended from the jungle fowl in the Asian tropical forests. Domestic chickens were kept in China up to 4,000 years ago but reached Britain at around AD100.

Poultry can be divided into laying or table birds. Laying birds are kept for egg production and lay mostly in the spring and summer. Table birds are kept for meat production and are larger and meatier than the laying birds.
