Woodland

The ancient woodlands lie in the hollows and steep banks above the river. Some areas are designated sites of special scientific interest due to their rare mosses, ferns and lichens. These areas are managed traditionally with a small amount of coppicing being done.

  • Coppicing involves harvesting the regrowth from the stumps of hazel (or other broadleaves) for making craft products such as hurdles, thatching spars or charcoal

  • This traditional management can improve habitats for wildlife as many species thrive in a wood that has a balance of light and shade.
