Welsh mountain sheep

The sheep flock has developed over generations and are famed for their hardiness – of key importance on this type of land. The sheep are 'hefted' which means that they are territorial and learn about the mountain from their mothers. They are able to thrive on the meagre grasses and survive the worst weather that Snowdonia can throw at them.

  • The National Trust has reduced sheep numbers as over-grazing in the past has harmed the mountain vegetation

  • Low stocking levels are required in organic farming because high numbers can result in problems with parasites and disease.
