Beetle banks

Rough grasses and wild flowers provide ideal habitats for beetles and other insects and birds that eat crop pests. Organic farms create these ‘beetle banks’ to help them naturally control pests such as aphids.

» MAKE FRIENDS WITH A MINI-BEAST

See what little creatures or mini-beasts you can find living on the farm:

» Look under stones and dead wood

» hake branches to see what falls off onto a piece of white paper

» Dig some 'pitfall' traps using yoghurt pots

» Look carefully on plants or on the ground.

Do different creatures prefer different habitats?
