Beech trees

At this point on the trail is a stand of old beech trees. Some are dying, but together they provide a home for a range of wildlife. The sheep are grazing the grass and clover which builds soil fertility. This is done for three to four years, followed by three years of arable cropping. This is called a crop rotation.

» TOWERING TREES

Beech trees grow as high as 42 metres (140 feet) - that's taller than a tower of eight double decker buses.

Beeches also make good hedges. The 30 metre (100 feet) high beech hedge in Perthshire is the tallest hedge in the world.

What's the tallest tree near you? Do you know what kind of tree it is?
