Farm buildings

The farm buildings provide storage for hay and straw for winter feed and bedding. The cattle are housed indoors during the winter - if they stayed outside, their feet would damage the structure of the wet soil. The buildings also provide homes for wildlife. Swallows are summer visitors that make their nests in the rafters of the old barn and owls nest in a purpose built nestbox.

» DID YOU KNOW?

When you visit a farm, you will probably find a range of buildings, both old and new, all designed for a different purpose.

Traditional farm buildings have evolved over centuries using local materials and techniques. This may be cob (a mixture of clay and straw) in Devon, timber framed in the Welsh borders or granite in Scotland.
