Pigs

Eastbrook is probably best known for pioneering organic pig farming. The sows are traditional British saddlebacks which are bred with a Duroc boar, producing a host of piglets – all with individual markings on their coats. These pigs are suited to being reared outdoors and produce meat with a good flavour.

  • Organic pigs have a real free range lifestyle, foraging on pasture with mobile 'arks' (houses) to provide shelter and security. They are given plenty of space and are moved to clean pasture regularly

  • Good animal husbandry helps to prevent stress and disease amongst the pigs.

» DID YOU KNOW?

Animal welfare in organic pig production is paramount and certain practices are prohibited. These include nose ringing and use of farrowing crates (when the sow giving birth is kept in a crate which restricts her movement - and her maternal instincts).
