Solar power

Electric fences are common on farms. They are useful for keeping animals inside a field or space and away from nearby crops. Electric fences are run from batteries. On most farms, these batteries are charged with electricity that is generated by burning one of the fossil fuels.

At Clynfyw the electric fence surrounding the pigs on the farm is powered using a photovoltaic (solar) panel which trickle-charges a battery and gives off a regular pulse of electricity along the wire. The power comes from daylight and does not need direct sunlight. It works well even during the winter with short grey days and long nights.

» QUESTION

Can you explain why it is more sustainable to use solar energy to power a battery and run an electric fence than to use fossil fuels?
