Reedbed sewage systemThe reedbed sewage system at Clynfyw is a natural and sustainable way of cleaning and purifying the waste water from up to 65 people staying in the farm house and holiday cottages. Waste water from the toilets is passed through the gravel filled reedbeds where it is treated by bacteria living on the surface of the gravel. The main role of the reeds is to bring oxygen down through their roots to the gravel to help the bacteria to digest the sewage. The clean water drains into a local stream and then into the rivers Cych and Teifi. Before the reedbed the waste water used to pass through a drain and seep
away into the soil. |

REEDBEDS
Reedbeds provide natural self-purification mechanisms for elimination of pollutants by exploiting the oxygen transporting properties of reeds. The benefits of using reedbeds include reducing the cost of sewage treatment and recycling nutrients back into the soil. |
