Biomass burner

Most farms in the UK use coal, oil or gas as a fuel to produce heat and hot water. Most homes and businesses also use these precious fossil fuels which are both expensive to buy and limited in their supply. How sustainable is that?

At Clynfyw the Bowen family have installed a new boiler (the Passat C2 400) which runs completely on waste wood and provides hot water and central heating for four holiday cottages at Clynfyw. This system is more sustainable because:

  • Wood is a renewable fuel (new trees can be planted)

  • The wood comes from a reasonably local source in south Wales so transport costs are low

  • It makes good use of a material (the waste wood) that is not good for much else.
