Organic animals

Clynfyw has a herd of Welsh black cattle, a flock of winter tack sheep and free range saddleback and Duroc pigs.

Animals at Clynfyw are managed in natural and sustainable ways which aim to ensure that they are healthy and that their impact on the environment is minimal. For example:

  • Manure from the animals helps build up soil fertility thus reducing the need for chemical fertilisers

  • Animals are kept at lower 'stocking densities' (animals per hectare of land). This means that sufficient food can be grown on the farm to feed all the animals without the need for artificial fertiliser to grow more grass. Feeding home grown food at Clynfyw also contributes to the sustainability of the farm because it reduces the need for additional feed to be brought in to the farm with the associated transport and pollution costs

  • Lower stocking levels also prevent the build-up of pests and disease so there is no need for a routine use of animal medicines. Medicines can only be used to treat genuine illness.

» DID YOU KNOW?

Organic livestock farming aims to prevent disease in the first place by promoting health - a healthy animal is better able to resist disease. This is achieved through appropriate diet, high welfare standards for housing and stocking levels, and reducing stress.
