Natural pest control

Non organic farmers control pests (like fungi and insects) by routinely spraying chemicals that kill pests. These are called pesticides.

Because Clynfyw is an organic farm, pests are usually controlled in more natural ways. For example:

  • Rotating crops between different fields in different years means that the level of pests attacking a particular crop or animal are not allowed to build up

  • Predators of crop pests such as ladybirds, beetles, bats and birds are encouraged through careful habitat management. Beetle banks, hedges and new woodland at Clynfyw all provide homes for these animals which will feed on crop pests.

Non-organic farmers can use over 450 pesticides. Organic farmers can only use six pesticides and then only as a last resort with special permission.
