Healthy soil

Soil is essential to life - not just to the life of plants that grow in the soil, but also to the life of animals that feed on those plants and to the life of humans that eat both plants and animals.

At Clynfyw, Jim, the farm manager, works hard to protect and improve the soil in a number of ways:

  • Adding nutrients to the soil in the form of farm manure

  • Growing crops which help build soil fertility, for example clover

  • Encouraging hedgerows and windbreaks to reduce soil erosion

  • Minimising the use of artificial chemicals which can damage soil organisms.

Thanks to careful management today, the soil will be able to support an equivalent or increased level of food production in the future. In this respect therefore, farming at Clynfyw is sustainable.

One centimetre of soil takes between 100 and 1000 years to form. One teaspoon of healthy soil contains one billion organisms with thousands of different species.
