New hedgerows

Hedgerows are an important part of the countryside. They help divide larger fields and provide shelter for crops and farm animals.

Unfortunately, many hedgerows have been removed over the last 50 years as farmers have tried to grow as much food as possible from their land.

Farmers like Jim Collins are planting new hedgerows. As well as providing shelter for crops and farm animals, hedgerows are important habitat for insects, small mammals and birds. Often these animals use the hedgerows as 'corridors', travelling along them safely without having to come out into the open.

In Britain 40% of hedgerows have been destroyed in the last 50 years; enough hedgerow to stretch four times around the world.
