Laying hens

The laying hens at Ashlyns Farm lead a truly free range lifestyle. They all have access to fields to look for food (forage) and live in small groups in the mobile chicken houses. Fresh eggs are collected from the chicken houses every day.

• On non-organic farms there may be up to 60,000 hens in one shed and each has a very small space (less than the size of an A4 sheet of paper) in which to move. In contrast, rules set out by the Soil Association mean that organic chickens cannot be kept in flocks bigger than 500 birds. This means that their lives will be more comfortable.

• Each chicken is provided with plenty of space for looking for food (foraging), perching and laying and they are moved to fresh grass fields (pasture) on a regular basis.
