Beans

Field beans are often grown on organic farms. The beans are an important source of protein and are often fed to the animals.

Beans are also useful as a 'break crop'. A break crop is a crop which is grown between cereals (e.g. wheat and oats).

Break crops are important because they help to stop the build-up of pests and diseases that feed on cereals. If cereal crops were grown year after year without a 'break', these pests and diseases would build up to very high levels.

» DID YOU KNOW?

Beans have deep roots that can improve the soil structure and bring up nutrients from deep in the soil.

Beans (and clover) belong to a group of plants called 'legumes'. Legumes add nitrogen to the soil and so help to make the soil more fertile.
