Lincoln red cattle

Since becoming an organic farm, Ashlyns Farm has introduced a small herd of traditional Lincoln red cattle.

The cows graze the fields of clover and grass and produce good quality beef that can be sold in the farm shop.

The cows will give birth to one calf each year and these calves grow for two years before being killed for their meat.

As well as earning an income for the farmer from their meat, the cows are very important for their manure which acts as a natural fertiliser and helps to make the soil more fertile.

» WHAT’S THE BEEF?

Beef cattle breeds tend to be stockier and more muscular than dairy breeds as they have been bred for generations for meat rather than milk.
