Cereals

The farm grows a range of cereal crops including wheat, oats, barley and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). These crops need fertile soil to grow well. Unlike other farmers, organic farmers do not use chemical fertilisers. Instead, Will and Hilary grow clover (which adds nutrients to the soil) and add manure to make the soil more fertile in a natural way.

  • Tall-strawed varieties of cereal help shade out weeds (and keep the crop away from soil-borne diseases).

Birds and beetles help the farmer by eating blackfly and greenfly (aphids) and other pests which are harmful to crops.
