Vegetables

Over 80 varieties of vegetable and salad are grown at Abbey Home Farm. The farm uses a rotation system which means that the type of crop grown in a field is changed each year. Rotating crops in this way helps to control the weeds, pests and diseases which can build up if the same crop is planted year after year.

A simple horticultural rotation would be:

  • Year one Legume (clover, peas or beans)

  • Year two root crops (potatoes, carrots etc)

  • Year three brassicas (cabbages, Brussels sprouts).

In the photo, the children are finding out about the plants growing in the plastic tunnel (called a 'polytunnel'). Using a polytunnel makes the growing season longer, so that vegetables can be grown for more months in the year.

» FRUIT OR ROOT?

Think about the vegetables you eat – can you think of any which are the fruit of a plant or the root? Do you eat the stems, flowers or seeds of any plants?
